I am both proud and honoured by the role of the editor of this book because Jovan Sterija\u00a0<\/span>Popovi\u0107n was born in my birthplace. Vr\u0161ac is called \u201cthe largest Japanese town in the\u00a0<\/span>Republic of Serbia\u201d because it has hosted the largest number of artists and athletes from\u00a0<\/span>Japan in the past decade. Our wish is to have Sterija\u2019s works live in Japan both through\u00a0<\/span>literature and theatre, \u201con the boards that mean life\u201d. The writer combined literary genius,\u00a0<\/span>particularly in comedy, with influential activities in the development of education, culture\u00a0<\/span>and institutions in Serbia. \u201cPokondirena tikva\u201d is a comedy depicting the character of a\u00a0<\/span>woman who publicly tries to pass herself off as high class, but her \u201ctate-mae\u201d (artificial\u00a0<\/span>image) has nothing to do with her \u201chone\u201d (honest thought). This discrepancy between what\u00a0<\/span>we want to be and what we are is explained by the Japanese concept \u201ctate-mae vs hone\u201d.
